SOMA cube

This project focused on developing precision model-making skills through the fabrication of the seven interlocking components of a SOMA cube and its accompanying storage box. The brief required each piece to be constructed from a range of materials, including hollow HIPS plastic, Jelutong timber, painted FDM 3D prints, and blue foam. Demonstrating both technical versatility and a high standard of craftsmanship.

Through this process, I refined my understanding of material behaviour, fabrication techniques, and finishing methods across both hand-built and digitally produced forms. Each component demanded careful measurement, shaping, assembly, and surface treatment to ensure the final cube could fit together accurately while maintaining a professional finish. The inclusion of multiple materials also encouraged experimentation with cutting, sanding, painting ect.

Overall, this project strengthened my ability to translate precise dimensions into physical outcomes and highlighted the importance of accuracy, patience, and material knowledge within industrial design prototyping and model making.
